The Uncanny Valley of Authenticity
"The new rebels might be artists willing to risk accusations of sentimentality, of melodrama. Of overcredulity. Of softness. Of willingness to be suckered by a world of lurkers and starers who fear gaze and ridicule above imprisonment without law. Who knows."
— David Foster Wallace
The Uncanny Valley of Authenticity (2025) is a piece for SATB autotune choir, three percussionists and live electronics. In six movements, the choir (mic’d) manipulates midi controllers through a range of effects that distort our understanding of the human voice throughout.
The work confronts the tension between irony and sincerity in contemporary culture, particularly as shaped by the internet and social media. In digital spaces, communication often oscillates between self-protective irony and a desire for genuine connection, and art itself has taken up irony as a defensive mechanism, a way to express what we truly care about while shielding vulnerability. By processing a live choir through Auto-Tune: a tool historically tied to both correction and aesthetic manipulation, the piece situates the human voice in this liminal zone, where intimacy and estrangement coexist.

The audio samples are taken from a pop-up table interview session I did at the University of Michigan on October 16, 2025. They represent some of my favorite answers to the questions I posed on that day, the most relevant of which being:
“When was the last time you felt you were truly yourself?”
I. Behold
Text:
Through a glass
Face to face
Wider than the sky
Deeper than the sea
Pound for pound
I am known.

Text:
I’m sorry.
I’ve made a severe and continuous lapse of my judgement and I don’t expect to be forgiven… I’m simply here to apologize.
What’s up everybody, today I wanted to sit here and turn on the camera and talk to you guys about some really serious subjects.
Hello, I wanted to make a statement on what I said in my previous livestream. I’ve been wanting to come online and talk to you about a few things.
I spent the last few months understanding the nuances and the complexities of what happened.
My team has strongly advised me to not say what I want to say
The only thing I’ve ever groomed is my persian cat
I feel I haven’t been myself
From the bottom of my heart
I tried to delete all of it
I wish I was more responsible and aware
I hate making these videos…but
It just slipped out
I’m just an idiot
I’m sorry if I hurt offended or disappointed anyone
I’m under a lot of stress right now
I apologize for the diss track, I in no way meant to hurt his feelings
I was in a dark place

Text:
You are beautiful. You are smart. Adore your curves.
Your smile is your finest offering. You are a star.
Age is a state of mind. You grow wiser and stronger as you age.
You age gracefully and live fully.
Every day you are getting happier in every way.
Dwell only in the present. Let go of your past mistakes.
This too shall pass. Trust your intuition. Glow in your flow.
Conquer yourself. Practice abstinence. Radiate confidence.
See only the good in everyone and everything.
Fan the flames of your tribe. The world needs more of you.

III. Index
Text:
An urge toward existence
And the ash that remembers
And the demon that gave him answers
And the seen and not heard
And the auditing of ourselves
VI. King of Empty Rooms
Text:
By nature
I am a very jealous person
Brand new things
Big numbers for my little mind
Supreme Gentleman
Gun in his hand
Every detail
Seeping through my computer screen
King of empty rooms
Crowning himself in corners
Crimes that cannot go unpunished
It is only fair.
