HEART MACHINE is an advanced work for flexible percussion ensemble (multiples of 3) and optional fixed media with click track for the performers.
Instrumentation: May be played with any number of percussionists, in multiples of 3 for doubling. For fixed media- an audio interface, in-ear monitors (for each player), a laptop, and some sort of amplification will be needed.
Duration: 6 minutes
About the piece: HEART MACHINE (2024) is a piece inspired by Fritz Lang’s 1927 masterwork film, Metropolis.
The Heart Machine itself is an enormous, deity-like structure with mechanical pistons, gears, and pulsing energy. Its design reflects expressionist influences, with exaggerated, dramatic forms that evoke both awe and fear. Visually, it resembles an ancient altar, eventually being imagined as the ancient god Moloch. Metaphorically, it represents human sacrifice-the mechanical mediator between the hands and head of society.
Upon purchase, you will receive a downloadable folder with access to the score, audience audio track file and player audio/click track file.
